Exceptions
As I return from a quick trip downstate and we move into the second week of the new year, here is an update on the year of homemade bread:
Only eating our own sourdough bread is the easy part, as it is perfect with really any meal: breakfast sandwiches, burgers, torn apart as garlic bread, truly…any meal.
But we did have to make a few exceptions, two that were needed and one that tip-toes the line of “well, sometimes it just happens”. We had to finish lo-mien noodles that were open in the pantry because we did not want to them to go to waste. And I did make Brian a burrito with the last flour tortilla from a pack in the fridge, again, because food waste is a top tier enemy. And the last, and most controversial (to us) topic, is that my parents and I had pizza from a local pizza place and well, sometimes it just happens. Was it delicious? Absolutely. Did I regret it? Absolutely not (although our dough is just as tasty). It definitely made us question the abundant parameters of the year of homemade bread, but it also raised conversations about why traveling is kind of the most important time to try and stick to the plan (breaking the convenience trap, not eating empty calories, sticking to local food, etc.). So, just a quick update to say we are back to the year of no bread and are excited to make some tortillas and pizza this week!
